Unlocking a greener tomorrow: Exploring SF₆-free technologies

Phasing out SF₆ from 2026 means transitioning to SF₆-free technology in the medium-voltage industry will be inevitable. The time to act is now. Let’s begin with exploring what lies beyond the gas-filled legacy.

SF₆-free technologies – a compelling blend of performance, safety, and environmental responsibility

Compared to SF₆-based switchgear, SF₆-free alternatives reduce the carbon footprint, enhance safety, and ensure reliable performance. Adopting them demonstrates environmental responsibility and compliance with emission standards in EMEA.

Further down, explore a comprehensive overview of the various SF₆-free technologies available today, ensuring you are well informed when you are ready to switch. Check out our on-demand webinar below for a deeper dive.

Conventional AIS relies on air as the insulation medium. It has been widely used for decades and offers simplicity, reliability, and ease of maintenance. While it lacks the compactness of GIS, it remains a viable choice for various applications for primary switchgear.

Eaton combines the best out of AIS and solid insulation in the Power Xpert UX and Power Xpert UX 36.

(Green) GIS – Gas insulated switchgear is the technology where efficiency meets intensity. It enhances dielectric strength by pressurising the air while maintaining compactness and reliability. High-pressure Air-GIS is ideal for substations with space constraints. Consider that pressure checks are needed since the pressure is 1.9 bars, higher than with the SF₆.

Solid-insulated switchgear (SIS) eliminates the risk of gas leaks and reduces maintenance. It is environmentally friendly and flame-resistant. SIS is suitable for harsh conditions and applicable in primary and secondary switchgear.

Fluorketones (such as 3M™ Novec™ 4710) currently serve as SF₆ alternatives with high dielectric strength and excellent arc-quenching properties. However, with GWP > 30 from 2026, they will also be out of usage.

Non-pressurised air-gas insulated switchgear combines natural dry air as an insulated medium, offering minimal footprint and climate impact with maximum performance and safety, requiring less maintenance. Because of its compactness, it is suitable for urban installations in secondary switchgear.
