Eaton 3-ph UPS system synchronization options

Eaton provides synchronization options to ensure the outputs of separate single Eaton UPSs or systems remain in-phase.  Use of these synchronization options allows uninterrupted transfer of the critical load from one UPS-protected bus to another by means of downstream dual source static transfer switches.
When a critical load is supplied from dual UPS-protected buses, static transfer switches are commonly used to instantly transfer power to the available bus, should one fail. If the buses become out of phase with each other, the transfer will not be seamless but there will be a short interruption. Eaton’s load synchronization options prevent the UPS outputs becoming out of phase with each other, which could happen e.g. when the inputs feeding each UPS system are not in sync with each other.

Eaton Sync Control

There are three types of options available for Eaton UPS products to synchronize their outputs for various purposes:

Sync Control II

  • Keep two separate Eaton UPS system outputs in sync to each other
  • Used when two UPS systems are feeding inputs of a static transfer switch (STS)
  • Allows the STSs make seamless transfers between system
  • Either UPS system can act as the sync reference 
  • Can’t be used to parallel outputs of two systems

Fixed Primary Sync Control

  • Operates similar to Sync Control II, with sync reference fixed to one primary system
  • Used when multiple UPS systems need to be synced to one primary system 
  • Alternatively, can be used to sync Eaton UPSs as permanent secondary, with other UPS system (static or rotary type) acting as the fixed reference
  • Can’t be used to parallel outputs of two systems

Power Block Sync

  • Used to firmly synchronize two separate Power Xpert 9395P systems to temporarily parallel the outputs of both systems
  • Allows to transfer loads from one bus to another while UPS systems remain online and loads protected
  • Allows using one maintenance UPS system for multiple UPS systems
  • Can be used to scale up the installation by adding more UPS systems
  • Power Block Sync is to be used only temporarily during load transfers
