Host:
Hello and welcome to Oh My Industrial Controls!... brought to you by the producers of Oh My PLC! — the game show you never saw before seeing it for the first time.

Let’s get into it with a round of Alphabet Soup!

Contestants, who can be the first to explain the difference between NEMA, IEC, and DP contactors?

Travis:
NEMA contactors are rated using a North American standard for durability and ability to withstand environmental conditions.

IEC contactors are truly international in their rating structure and also cover most of the same applications as NEMA.

Finally, DP or Definite Purpose contactors, made for the HVAC market, carry very specific application ratings and low operation capability.

Host:
Travis...there’s no fly in that Alphabet Soup! You’ve got it right!

Host:
Or is there? Josh...let us know what you’re buzzing about.

Josh:
NEMA, IEC and DP also vary in cost. NEMA rated devices tend to come at a higher price point, followed by IEC and then DP.

Host:
That is also correct! Great info there.

Looks like Asma has some piping hot facts to add?

Asma:
The reason for the price differences among those rating groups has to do with things like the item’s lifespan. NEMA rated contactors are pricier because they are built for long-term durability.

IEC offers a comparatively lower electromechanical life span, and DPs are the least expensive and have the lowest life span of the three.

Host:
Well that was an outstanding round with all three contestants posting points on the board!

I’m going to get a grilled cheese sandwich but don’t you move... We’ll be right back with more...
