Eaton’s iProx availability key to Allen Steel’s $600,000 downtime savings

Customer success story: Allen Steel

Allen Steel case study

Location: Memphis, TN, USA

Challenge: Immediate need for an inductive proximity switch to avoid downtime

Solution: Eaton installed and programmed iProx within two hours

Results: Customer avoided costly downtime and converted to iProx

After Eaton provided an iProx to enable Allen Steel’s main steel incoming line to resume operations within two hours, the mill converted to the product and began looking to Eaton for other electrical component solutions.

Eaton’s Iain Baigrie reports, “The mill called one of our distributors looking for a competitor’s inductive proximity switch to replace one that failed on a critical piece of machinery. After I told the distributor that I didn’t have the competitor’s product, I explained that I had an iProx that would enable the mill to resume operation.

“Since the competitor’s product wouldn’t be available for a week, the mill faced a downtime cost of $600,000. I delivered the iProx to the mill and programmed it to meet the application’s needs. As a result, the machine resumed operation within two hours.”

Allen Steel not only recognized Eaton’s commitment to customer service and its ability to provide immediate support, but also the value of the iProx’s programmability. As a result, the mill has converted to the iProx for all proximity switch replacements, which also reduces its inventory. In addition, the mill has already begun buying other Eaton products and looking to the company for all its electrical company needs.
