Eaton's CYME cable thermal rating module utilizes the CYMCAP software calculation engine to precisely simulate, determine ampacity and temperature rise for power cable installations. Utilities can take advantage of steady state, cyclic and transient* thermal simulations to identify possible risks or prevent premature cable damage produced by overheating, and validate if cables have been exposed over the maximum operating conditions given historical or forecasted demand profiles.
Users can easily create 'what-if'** scenarios to enable the inclusion of duct bank installations in longterm planning activities as well as find the optimal parameters of actual or planned installations (cable size, materials, depth, introduce duct filler, distance between cables, etc.) and maximize the benefits of the cable installation investment.
*Transient simulations require Load Flow with Profiles add-on module.
**It can also be integrated with the Advanced Project Manager add-on module to evaluate thermal impact of planning modifications as new loads or generation.
The cable modeling module features several layers required for ampacity calculations: conductor shield, insulation, screen, metallic sheath, fillers, jacket around each core, armor bedding, armor serving, jacket, among others.
Some of these layers and associated data are optional since they are not required for the cable circuit equivalent impedance calculation.
CYME libraries of metallic and non-metallic materials support an extensive range of cable constructions and types providing thermal ratings calculations for each.
The underground cable installation modeling module has significant capabilities. It can utilize the geometric arrangement of an individual cable pertaining to a given circuit or include the duct bank structure to a single section with one circuit and several cables or multiple sections associated with different circuits, providing the user with extensive flexibility.
Cable positioning is based on the duct bank structure allowing the automatic determination of the X,Y coordinates of each cable. Cables can easily be assigned to a given duct, or moved to another duct, to create an accurate representation of the actual cable arrangement in the field.
